Patients are generally considered eligible if they meet the following criteria: BMI of 40 kg/m or above , or BMI of 3539.9 kg/m with a significant obesity-related comorbidity such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnoea, or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease All appropriate non-surgical measures have been tried but have failed to achieve or maintain adequate clinically beneficial weight loss The patient is fit for anaesthesia and surgery The patient commits to long-term follow-up NICE CG189 also recommends that bariatric surgery should be considered as a first-line option for adults with a BMI over 50 kg/m, where surgical intervention may be more clinically appropriate than prolonged conservative management
